Various Radio System Signal Digital Simulation and Analysis by Means of the Hardware-in-the-loop Experimental Tryout Complex

Abstract
 Current grade of digital technology development allows wide capabilities for signal generation using various, more compli-cated modulation types, that is reasonable to be implied in radio facility design. The system approach to complex radio facility development implies matched choice of hardware and software solutions at the beginning stage of development. The introduced experimental tryout complex provides simulation of various radio facility signals, new and perspective signal simulation and analysis.The article pre-sents simulated signal spectrums generated by means of the hardware-in-the-loop tryout complex, including the chirp, phase-code modulation using M-sequences, Legendre, Jacobi sequences, as well as QAM and stochastic modulating func-tions. High sidelobe levels of compressed signals hinder the operation of both radar and communication systems. In the case of SAR, proper selection of modulating functions allows to reject sidelobe levels in the output image after azimuth compression. So, the two-dimensional response function pro-vides the most adequate preliminary estimation for the choice of SAR sounding signal.
On base of simulation results, the random alternating and the circular shift of modulating M-sequences are found to provide relative sidelobe rejection without principal compli-cations of hardware schematic. However, the integral sidelobe level important for the tasks of backscatter measurement and dark object detection remains constant. The chirp provides better radiometric characteristics. The Legendre sequences result in relative sidelobe levels comparable with those of M-sequences, but the sidelobes tend to local minimum at the ¼-length shift. The noise radar signals have some advantages in masked survey because they are indistinguishable from communication signals. The analysis presented in the article helps to provide informed choice of signal modulation functions for radio facilities to be designed. The experimental tryout complex used for signal digital generation, recording and analysis proved to be usable for various radio system tests.
