Abstract
In this paper, common bit error rate ( BER ) calculation methods are briefly reviewed and compared. Statistical BER calculation method was proposed. Presented technique was checked used SPICE simulation. The results are demonstrated.
PURPOSE
The opportunity to assess clock jitter and BER in Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) at the design stage is important. Several methods of calculating BER are available. Usually BER calculation methods are not universal, they require relatively complicated preparation for simulation. The accuracy and speed of analysis depends on the implementation of the algorithm. The objective of this work was to create a universal and line method BER calculation.
METHODS
In BER estimation, the statistical approach is very fast in contrast to conventional direct Spectre/SPICE simulation, which requires more time for the sample set.
Using short SPICE simulation with noise effects the RMS of CLK jitter is analyzed. Then, we integrate the probability density function of jitter. BER is the result of the integration of the probability density function of taking into account the parameters of the receiver input stages.
RESULTS
The proposed method of calculating the BER can significantly reduce simulation time. The total error of BER estimation is not more than 10%.
This method can be implemented as a VERILOG module for integration into the test at block schematics transceiver design.
